Text 1
M: Here are two packages for you from New York. Could you please sign your name here?
W: Sure. Thanks.
Text 2
W: Look how thin the mommy is—and she had a baby only six months old.
M: Yeah, my wife gets really depressed when she sees moms like that. She had our daughter two years ago and she still can't lose weight.
Text 3
W: I wanted to go to Spain in August but it's so expensive.
M: Well, summer is peak season, so it's the most expensive time. Why not go later in the year?
Text 4
W: I'm hungry. Shall we go for a bite to eat?
M: Sounds good.
W: And then how about going to see the new film?
M: It's wonderful.
Text 5
M: Oh, Susan, you look so good—quite different from when I saw you two years ago.
W: Well, I started jogging regularly one year ago and my weight started dropping from 243 pounds to the 160 pounds I am now.
Text 6
W: Welcome to Wembley!
M: Pleased to meet you, Mrs Frost!
W: Please call me Diana. Now let me show you your room and then we can have a nice cup of tea. Or would you prefer coffee?
M: Thanks. Either is OK.
W: This is your bedroom. There's a nice view of the football stadium and here's a little desk where you can study. The bathroom is just opposite the door.
M: This looks nice and comfortable. Do you have any rules here?
W: Yes. Pets are not allowed here and loud noises are prohibited after 10 pm.
Text 7
W: Is this your desk?
M: No, we have hotdesking here. I work at any desk I want. It's much more efficient.
W: What does hotdesking mean?
M: Well, this term was brought into common use in the 1990s to describe a new working practice. It means to share a desk or office space. Workers don't have their own desks, but share them at different times.
W: But I'd think you'd like to have your things around you!
M: I know what you mean. This system of working is well suited to firms who have staff frequently out of the office, for example salespeople like me, who are mostly on the road.
Text 8
W: Did you move into your new apartment?
M: Yes, but I'm afraid it's still a mess. It'll probably take me about three weeks to get everything organised.
W: Don't worry. Have you taken a walk around your neighbourhood yet?
M: Well, I took a long walk through the neighbourhood this morning on my way to the train station. It took me 20 minutes.
W: That's a long way to the train station, but then you only pay 800 dollars a month. It's hard to decide which is better, a shorter distance or lower rent.
M: I thought paying a lower rent would be better, but now I'm not sure.
W: Is there a supermarket nearby?
M: Yes, if you don't mind the 30minute walk there.
W: Sounds like you'd better buy a bicycle.
M: That's right, or I'm going to spend a lot of time walking.
Text 9
W: Hi, Tim! I've been wondering when I'd run into you. Have you been here long?
M: I arrived yesterday, on Sunday. How about you?
W: I got here a few days ago, on Wednesday. No, wait a minute. What's the day today? Sorry. Tuesday, not Wednesday.
M: But we didn't have to be here till today.
W: Yes, I know, but I wanted to get my things moved into my room, and just take a look around. So, did you decide to do English in the end?
M: No, I changed my mind and chose history instead. And you're doing biology, right?
W: Yes, although to start with I couldn't decide between that and geography.
M: How much reading have you got?
W: Let me look at my list... Wow, it does look pretty tong.
M: Well, I counted 57 books on mine. I could hardly believe it! So what's your list like?
W: Well, it's not as long as yours, but it's still pretty big. There are 43.
M: Have you got your class schedule yet?
W: Yeah. It came with the reading list.
Text 10

Two years ago, Hannah Mighall, then 13, survived a great white shark attack on Tasmania's northeast coast, but despite the terrible scars, the shy yet courageous teenager is determined to get back into the water.
It's been a long journey back for the brave girl, whose life was changed forever as she was on her surfboard 60 metres offshore at Binalong, Bay, Tasmania.
Her cousin, 32yearold Syb Mundy, was surfing nearby, “Suddenly, everything went quiet, ”Hannah, now15,recalls of the day she almost lost her life, “I look down into the water and noticed a dark shadow under my board and I knew instantly it was a shark.”
As Syb watched in horror, the fivemetre shark put hundreds of sharp teeth onto Hannah's right leg, throwing her from her board, “I was attached to my legrope as the shark started to pull me under the water”, she shakes, “I was lying on my back with one leg under the shark's body and the other still in its jaws.”
Syb desperately punched (猛击)the shark's nose and reached out to grab Hannah as the monster bit a huge chunk(大块)from the surfboard, “I was still attached to my board and was dragged back under the water again,”she says. When she came up for air, Hannah dog paddled(爬泳)to Syb's board and he dragged her from the water to lie on his back. “We looked down and saw the shark circling beneath us,”Hannah says.
Hannah was rushed to the hospital by helicopter. She needed more than 400 stitches(针)on her leg and spent two weeks in hospital.
Modest about her remarkable courage, Hannah owes her survival to Syb's bravery and the fact that great whites, despite their reputation as maneaters, typically don't target humans. After the attack, Hannah earned the Sea Shepherd award for courage for speaking in defence of the shark. “I was in her territory, she wasn't in mine,”she smiles.

As rain begins to fall from the clouds, it is very pure. However, as it falls through the air it dissolves some of the gases in the air, It also collects bits of dust and microbes(微生物)that are floating in the air. When the rain reaches the ground it begins to pick up more dust and dirt. Many kinds of mineral substances dissolve in the water. Sand and mud cannot dissolve in water.
